Pit Bulls and Spay Neuter
Dog lovers around the world have been captivated by the recent story of Patrick, the pit bull found starved and severely abused in New Jersey. While spaying and neutering any pet is important to prevent overpopulation and abuse, it is especially true with the pit bull breed.
Pit bulls are a breed that "suffers horribly at the hands of humans." Jason Flatt, the President and founder of Friends to the Forlorn Pit Bull Rescue Inc, explains why this breed has such a bad reputation. "The media can't wait to exploit a pit bull story. These dogs make up a large percentage of the dogs that need homes. They are way over bred and not for quality. They are a extremely popular breed, especially in lower income, high crime neighborhoods. Owners are not often responsible for the pet and instead have them for the image and status instead of providing the dog a loving home environment."
Amazingly, statistics show that only one out of every eight hundred pit bulls makes it out of the pound alive. Everyone wants a pit bull when it is a cute, adorable little puppy but when they realize they can't properly maintain and care for it, they are dumped on the street. They become the dogs that bite people and that you hear about on the news, the ones mistreated and left hungry. When people run across them on the street, they aren't nice to them and thousands are abused since they are helpless to fight off attackers. Over one million pit bulls end up this way and are put to sleep in pounds across the country. Often, if the dog attacks, it may because of provocation but due to their reputations, they are found guilty and sentenced to death.
Jason says that what he wants people to understand is that this breed is a very human oriented dog, loving, loyal and intelligent. They do better on temperament tests that most other breeds and are eager to please their humans. Human aggression is not a trait common to the breed. If you've ever experienced the love of a pit bill, you would want no other breed.
There are pit bull owners out there now reading this blog post and you know that these words are true. If you love your pet, spay or neuter them and help end the cycle of abuse that comes with this breed. You never know who will end of with one of the puppies your dog is responsible for and what type of life it may or may not have.

Veterinary Tax for Georgia Pet Owners?
Spay Neuter SOS wants to make all Georgia residents aware of a veterinary tax our legislators are trying to pass. A joint legislative committee has introduced a bill to tax veterinary services, which could cause pet owners to see a 7%-8% increase in vet bills. Currently in our great state, veterinary services are not taxed but medications and supplies are. They need to hear from all pet owners who are their constituents. Please take time to write or call your congressman and tell them you OPPOSE this bill. You can click here to locate your legislator.

How Old Should My Dog Be Before I Spay or Neuter?
Sounds like a totally innocent question asked by a loving pet owner but, man, is this ever a topic up for debate!
We all know the numbers and statistics routinely seen on TV commercials or on the Internet about homeless pets. We witness news stories about animal abuse and wonder how anyone could do such a thing. The pet population grows everyday as does the number of animals having to be euthanized simply because there just isn't enough room for them. The only way this tragedy will ever stop is through spaying or neutering your pet.
But Google spay neuter and you get tons of information about when do it, why and how to do it and it's downright confusing. Many animal groups, including our sister organization, Mostly Mutts Animal Rescue, firmly supports pediatric spay neuter. This means that the dog is at least eight weeks old and weighs a minimum of eight pounds. If the dog is a male, the testicles will have had to drop.
The advantages to early spay neuter are:

The advantages to early spay neuter are:
- The healing time for the pet will be faster. The dog is a sore for a few days but the down time on a younger dog is much shorter than a dog who is older.
- The cost to the pet owner is generally less due to the fact that most spay neuters are charged by weight.
- The dog is under anesthesia for less time as a puppy and this is much safer for the dog.

Spay Neuter Globally
Think spay neuter efforts are concentrated only here in the US? Below is a link to a spay neuter group out of Egypt. Worldwide efforts to increase the awareness of spay neuter will decrease the vast amount of animals throughout the world that are needlessly put down because there are simply too many to care for. Like their page and support their efforts!

A long term benefit of spaying and neutering is improving the health of your cats. Spaying females prior to their first heat cycle nearly eliminates the risk of breast cancer and totally prevents uterine infections and uterine cancer. Neutering males prevents testicular cancer and enlargement of the prostate gland and greatly reduces the risk of perianal tumors.

What is the Spay Neuter Society of the South?
Spay Neuter Society of the South is affliated with Mostly Mutts Animal Rescue and Adoption, Inc. Mostly Mutts, founded in 2004, has one mission: to rescue dogs from local shelters and house them until they are adopted into wonderful homes. They rescue dogs of all ages, breeds, sizes and health conditions, many of which require heartworm treatment, treatment for disease or mange, or have orthopedic issues. They are given the best of care and a lot of love while they are with Mostly Mutts and the organization strives to see that each dog is placed in a home where their needs will be fully met.
Rescue is rewarding but exhausting. For every ten dogs out of the back door from animal shelters, twenty-five more come in the front. We are losing the battle to help ALL of the animals that need rescue and only spinning our wheels to help some of them. We know we can do more but it’s just NOT going to be done through rescue.
The battle can only be won by decreasing the pet population. The only way to successfully do this is to spay and neuter more dogs and cats. This is where Mostly Mutts again stepped up and founded Spay/Neuter Society of the South. This is a spay/neuter campaign that involves marketing, advertising, education and social media to spread the word for pet owners to spay and neuter their pets. It’s time that pet owners understand that it’s their responsibility to not allow their dogs and cats to continue to reproduce.
Reducing the pet population will not only decrease the euthanasia rates at local shelters, it will also make the community a safer place. Fewer dogs and cats are likely to roam, therefore getting hit by cars or increasing the communities bite cases. Dogs and cats will be healthier, with less chance of getting some cancers, and they will be better suited to live as indoor dogs with less marking and other bad behaviors. There is not one good reason to not spay and neuter your pet.
Please be a responsible pet owner; have your pet spayed or neutered!
